We were commissioned to adapt and extend an existing dilapidated workshop building to create a low-cost, robust artist's studio and living quarters.
Within a conservation area in a picturesque Suffolk town, the project creates volume and light-filled spaces simply and stealthily, behind the retained, refurbished facade of the existing building.
The final proposal was the product of a series of studies with the client, who favoured a raw and industrial expression, and discussions with the local planning authority about how a non-residential building should sit in the streetscene of small cottages.
The project won planning permission in 2018.
