HAT Projects was shortlisted for the £7m renovation of the Europe 1600-1800 galleries in the V&A. Our concept was a simple series of 'portal rooms' that subdivided the restored grand gallery spaces while retaining their essential openness and sense of proportion. The 'portals' would enclose immersive and thematic displays, and would vary through the gallery sequence to suggest more internal and external settings. A palette of stone ranging from marble to limestone subtly references the opulence and craftsmanship of the objects to be displayed.
